The Department of War has formally released the 2026 Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) rates, confirming the figures that briefly appeared during a short-lived online leak on December 10. Beginning January 1, service members will see an average nationwide increase of about 4.2 percent, based on the department’s annual assessment of rental markets, utilities, and local conditions across 299 military housing areas. Total BAH payments for 2026 are projected to approach $29.9 billion, with rate changes varying widely depending on local rent trends, vacancy levels, and cost-of-living shifts.
Two core program features remain unchanged. 

First, BAH continues to cover approximately 95 percent of calculated median housing costs, leaving most members with an estimated out-of-pocket share of $93 to $212 per month. 

Second, individual rate protection ensures that service members who remain continuously eligible at their duty station will not see their BAH reduced even if local rates fall; only new arrivals receive the updated amount.
With final rates now in place, service members can incorporate the confirmed figures into PCS planning, lease renewals, housing searches, and 2026 budgets.

How the New BAH Fits Into the Full Picture
The tables that appeared briefly online showed a national average increase of about 4.19 percent—nearly identical to the now-confirmed 4.2 percent adjustment. While the leaked numbers were provisional at the time, they provided an early look at how DoD’s locality-based modeling was trending: most MHAs showed increases, while a smaller share showed flat or declining values, consistent with typical annual patterns driven by rental market behavior.

Provisional data from the leak highlighted notable increases for E-6s with dependents in mid-sized markets, regional hubs, and certain tourism-driven areas that experienced tightening rental conditions throughout 2025. In some of these MHAs, double-digit jumps appeared—particularly in Mid-Atlantic commuter zones, Southeastern regional centers with constrained housing inventory, and Midwestern metros where multifamily vacancy rates had tightened. These trends suggested another year in which many mid-grade families would see higher allowances aligned with rising local rents.

The leaked data also suggested decreases in several MHAs, especially in high-cost tourist locations and certain Sun Belt cities where rents appeared to have cooled relative to earlier DoD data cycles.

Families remaining at their duty station should reassess their leases, budgets, and local housing conditions to ensure alignment with the 2026 allowance.

The brief leak provided an early preview, but the official release now offers the authoritative numbers that finance offices will use and that families can rely on. Whether moving, renewing a lease, or making longer-term housing decisions, service members now have the verified data necessary to plan the year with clarity and confidence.

In 2026, the Department of Defense (DoD) will expand Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) eligibility for most CONUS moves and clarify the daily reimbursement cap. Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) will continue to reflect local rental data and rate-protection rules. Understanding these regulations—and knowing how to escalate issues-can help service members avoid preventable financial losses.

How BAH Rates Are Determined

Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) is a tax-free benefit meant to offset typical housing costs in each Military Housing Area (MHA). Rates are based on ZIP code, pay grade, and dependency status.

Each year, the Defense Travel Management Office (DTMO) samples rental listings and utility costs across MHAs. These data points are used to set rates that reflect typical off-base housing meeting minimum quality standards for each pay grade.

Updated BAH locality tables are usually released in mid-December and take effect on January 1. Your actual allowance depends on your MHA, pay grade, and dependency status.

BAH rate protection ensures that once you establish eligibility at a duty station, you receive any rate increases but are insulated from decreases—so long as your duty location, pay grade, and dependency status remain unchanged. Rate protection ends if you PCS to a new MHA, experience a reduction in grade, or change your dependency status.

Locality rates published for a ZIP code cannot be appealed. However, administrative errors—such as an incorrect ZIP code, grade, or dependency status—should be corrected immediately. Finance offices can help verify whether a lower rate is appropriate or whether rate protection should apply.

Understanding the New TLE Baseline Rules and the Hard Cap

Standard TLE for CONUS-to-CONUS moves increases from 14 to 21 days in 2026. For OCONUS moves, consult your orders and your finance office for specific entitlements. A hard cap of $290 per day per household remains in place. TLE is calculated as a percentage of the locality per diem.

Lodging taxes and mandatory fees count toward the $290 daily cap under the Joint Travel Regulations. Itemized, zero-balance lodging receipts are required, and reimbursement cannot exceed the actual amount paid.

For FY 2026, the General Services Administration (GSA) maintained the same CONUS per diem base rates as FY 2025. This means TLE calculations remain similar unless traveling to a Non-Standard Area with a higher rate.

Commands and finance offices may authorize TLE extensions in specific circumstances—often tied to documented housing shortages. Housing and finance offices can explain local extension options and required justification.

Quick Checks Before Submitting Any Claim

• Verify that your MHA ZIP code, dependency status, and pay grade match your orders and current situation. Many BAH discrepancies stem from simple data entry errors.
• Ensure your hotel dates fall within the authorized PCS window for your losing or gaining PDS. House-hunting trips follow different rules.
• For TLE, receipts must list nightly room rates, taxes, mandatory fees, and a zero balance. If claiming dependent entitlements, provide proof of their presence.

If Your BAH Seems Too Low

Correct administrative errors (ZIP code, grade, or dependency status) by providing orders and supporting documents—such as marriage or birth certificates—to your finance or military personnel office. If the new-year rate in your MHA decreases but your status is unchanged, rate protection may allow you to keep the previous higher rate.

Submitting updated rental and utility data to the housing office can help improve future rate calculations, but it won’t change your current-year rate.

If Your TLE Is Denied or Underpaid: How to Appeal

Start with a quick re-adjudication. Then Ask your finance office to review the claim. Provide complete documentation: orders, amendments, DD Form 1351-2, itemized zero-balance receipts, proof of dependents, and your authorized TLE days. Confirm that taxes and mandatory fees fall within the $290 daily cap and that you aren’t requesting more than your actual lodging costs.

If the finance office denies an entitlement in error, you may file an appeal with the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS). DFAS may issue its own determination or forward the case to the Defense Office of Hearings and Appeals (DOHA) for a final decision.

Your appeal packet should include:

 1. PCS orders and amendments 

 2. Vouchers and denial notices 

 3. Itemized nightly lodging receipts 

 4. Proof of dependents, if applicable 

 5. A short memorandum identifying the relevant JTR provisions and explaining the correction you are requesting

Planning Tips for Your 2026 PCS

Build your budget around the official rules—not guesses. Hold off until the December BAH tables come out for your new ZIP code, and always check whether rate protection applies if the numbers drop. Pick lodging that gives you clean receipts. Make sure the hotel lists the room rate, taxes, and fees separately. Save every single night’s receipt—you’ll need them.

Keep track of your TLE days before you move. For CONUS moves, you can plan on up to 21 days. If you think you’ll need more time, talk to your housing office early.

If housing is tight, get the housing office involved. They can verify local shortages and help you collect the paperwork needed for a TLE extension or extra support.

8. Flight 19: Lost in the Bermuda Triangle

5. America’s Lost Nuclear Weapons: Secrets of the Cold War

Two mysterious U.S. military incidents from the Cold War era remain unresolved — both involving the loss of nuclear bombs that have never been recovered.

Tybee Island, Georgia (1958):
On February 5, 1958, a B-47 bomber collided midair with an F-86 fighter jet during a training mission. To prevent a potential explosion, the bomber’s crew released a Mark 15 nuclear bomb into the waters near Tybee Island. Despite extensive search efforts, the weapon was never found.

Philippine Sea (1965):
On December 5, 1965, an A-4E Skyhawk jet armed with a B-43 nuclear bomb accidentally rolled off the deck of the USS Ticonderoga and plunged into the ocean — sinking to a depth of more than 16,000 feet. The pilot, aircraft, and bomb were lost without a trace.

Both incidents are officially classified as “Broken Arrow” events — the U.S. military’s term for accidents involving nuclear weapons that do not create the risk of nuclear war. To this day, the missing bombs remain hidden beneath the sea, shrouded in Cold War secrecy.

4. UFO Sightings and the Mysterious Green Fireballs: 1948–1950s

On December 5, 1948, military personnel stationed at Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico reported witnessing a brilliant green fireball streak silently across the night sky. 2. Yamashita’s Treasure: The Lost Gold of World War II

As World War II came to an end in 1945, whispers spread across the Pacific that retreating Japanese forces had hidden vast quantities of looted gold, jewels, and cultural artifacts throughout the Philippines. This fabled hoard became known as Yamashita’s Treasure, named after General Tomoyuki Yamashita, the Japanese commander in the region.

In 1971, a Filipino treasure hunter named Rogelio Roxas claimed to have unearthed part of the cache near Baguio City — including several gold bars and a solid-gold Buddha statue. Not long after his discovery, Roxas reported that armed men confiscated the treasure and that he was subsequently detained.

Years later, in 1996, a U.S. court determined that Roxas had indeed found evidence of hidden treasure and awarded damages against former Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos, who was accused of seizing it. Yet the true location — and full extent — of Yamashita’s Treasure remains a mystery.

To this day, tales of the lost gold continue to capture imaginations, making Yamashita’s Treasure one of the most enduring legends of the Pacific War.
